BIOGRAPHY

︎︎︎

May Roosevelt is a greek composer, thereminist and producer. Born and raised in Thessaloniki, she took to violin lessons at the age of twelve. A few years later she focused on the pioneering electronic musical instrument theremin and the composition of electronic music.

In 2009, she released her first EP, "Panda, a story about love and fear" (Coorecords), that led to her participation at the Red Bull Music Academy 2010 in London.

"Haunted" (2011), her second album was the result of her speculation of the position held by traditional Greek rhythms in the canon of Greek electronic music. This exploration subsequently led to the creative transformation of eight different Greek dances. May Roosevelt embedded Greek musical idioms anew, within contemporary music while retaining their respectable characteristics. The theremin was used to create a plethora of curious sounds, ranging from wind and stringed instruments to the imitation of human voice.

In 2013 she released her album "Music to the poetry of Ntinos Christianopoulos" (Ianos Publications). Here, her piano based compositions are enriched by the theremin and are driven by the recitation of the poems by the poet himself. Lyrical melodies, elements of Greek folk music and Byzantine church hymns are blended, echoing the literary pseudonym of the poet and capturing the confessional aspect of his poetry.

May Roosevelt marked her return in 2017 with her album titled «Junea» where crystal sounds, rhythmic beats and ethereal vocals create a multi-layered sound environment, Junea's world, a parallel dream universe where synthesizers reign.

Her most popular musical piece, "Memoir #2 [06.12.09]", has amassed 27M+ streams on Spotify and went viral on social media platforms in 2022. In the same year, May Roosevelt released the singles Miniature I, II & III. "Miniatures" is an ongoing project comprising of theremin musical pieces of small duration and distilled emotion.

All of May Roosevelt's albums have received rave reviews from the Greek and international music press. Her album "Music to poetry of Ntinos Christianopoulos" was voted album of the year; together with Junea have been included in "best Greek albums of the decade 2010-2019" lists (by Lifo Magazine and Avopolis Network-Sonic Magazine) link . May Roosevelt has collaborated with Greek and foreign artists and has given concerts in Greek and European cities (London, Barcelona, Hamburg, Berlin among others). She participated in the 4th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art (2013-14) with her artwork 'Ode to Joy' (Audio-Video), which is in the collection of the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki.

In 2020-2021, she completed a cycle of 8 radio shows on Movement Radio (Onassis Stegi) as a radio producer, under the title 'LTDM80J', based on Jules Verne's classic novel "Around the World in 80 Days".

Her studies and work in the field of graphic design enabled her to curate and design the unique look and artwork of all her records. She also composes original music for theatre, documentaries and cinema.
